I was completely hooked on sugar. I didn’t used to be a sugar addict, but in recent years, especially after I met my husband – desserts became an everyday event. We would go out for ice cream many times a week; search for the best cheesecake in almost every area we traveled to – I was completely sold on sugar. I would insist that chocolate was essential to my health and well-being. I told myself many lies in order to not have to give up sugar.
But my latest visit with my doctor, convinced me that I REALLY needed to change for the sake of my health. That’s when I changed my lifestyle and adopted the Mediterranean diet. The change was dramatic and difficult for the first many days, but became easier and easier with each passing day. Sugar was the most difficult “food group” to give up. I would seriously crave sugar, desserts, CHOCOLATE – everything I used to love. Evenings were the most difficult time of day. That’s when I would always have the most sugar. It was almost like a reward for getting through the day.
After one month of a sugar-free lifestyle – the cravings are gone. I feel 100 times better and I have dropped nearly 9 pounds.
How much sugar do you consume?
I’d love to hear about others who have broken the sugar addition!

My girlfriend told me of this recipe a few days ago and I’m completely hooked. It’s so easy, healthy and delicious.
I can of black beans – rinsed and drained
1 can of corn – rinsed and drained
little bit of chopped red onion
as much as you like of fresh, chopped cilantro
olive oil
balsamic vinegar
Use as much oil and vinegar as you like. I use about 2 TBS of each. Mix everything together and enjoy!

I’ve been eating the typical Mediterranean diet for almost four weeks now, and I can absolutely feel the results. I said I wasn’t going to continue to weigh myself, but that’s never going to happen. So, I got on the scale this morning and found that I lost 7 pounds since I started on August 20th 2010. I could definitely tell in my clothes. I’m able to wear things that I couldn’t have dreamed of wearing just one month ago.
The food is a big change for me – the girl who LOVES anything chocolate, ice cream, cheesecake and pizza. I no longer eat sugar, flour (except for whole wheat), most meats and dairy. I do eat more vegetables than I ever thought I would; lots of whole grain foods, lots of beans and humus – which I now LOVE.
I also take a bunch of supplement now too, all of which my doctor recommended. The supplements include Zinc, Vitamin E, Vessel Guard – which is high in Vitamin B and folic acid, Iodine, a multi-vitamin, fish oil (if I don’t have fish that day) and Vitamin C.
My one indulgence is Snapple Diet Lemon Tea.

It’s been waaaaaaay too long since I wrote a post. Usually that’s a sign that I’m not behaving on my diet. And that was true – along with a long list of other excuses.
I went to my annual doctor visit and this particular doctor is all about nutrition. He finally scarred me enough to make some changes – permanent changes – in my life. He believes that we should all be eating the Mediterranean diet. And, no it’s not a diet program – it’s a way of eating. Eating like the people from countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. Greece, Italy – wonderful places like those.
When I returned home from the doctor – I decided that I am going to change my lifestyle NOW. So,I got rid of all the junk food in the house. I made a list of the new foods that I should be eating and made a list for the grocery store. The basic idea of the diet is this -
- only whole grains, complex carbohydrates – no more white flour, white rice, etc.
- very little meat – when we have meat, it is very lean
- fish, fish, fish
- no dairy – only organic non-fat plain yogurt; no cheese – except for a little Parmesan on whole wheat pasta and the like
- lots of fruit, but no fruit juices
- even more vegetables
-Â olive oil
In addition to the food changes, my doctor also put me on a regimen of nutritional supplements.
More about the supplements in the next post!
