Losing weight, one diet at a time; one month at a time…

Houston’s Restaurant Veggie Burgers

I searched the Internet for a recipe for my all-time favorite Veggie Burger. It’s from the restaurant that I’ve only seen in the South – Houston’s.

I found the recipe at the RecipeZaar but I’ve also found it a few other places and I have no idea which is the original, but… – Here is my version of the recipe:

4 tablespoons hickory barbecue sauce
1 tablespoon molasses
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained
2 cups cooked brown rice
1 tablespoon oat bran
2 tablespoons onions, finely chopped
2 tablespoons finely chopped canned beets
2 teaspoons beet juice
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon pickled jalapeno peppers, chopped
1 egg white

I only increased the amount of beets, beet juice and chili powder.

1. Stir together barbecue sauce and molasses. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, mash beans. Stir in 3 tablespoons of the barbecue mixture (reserving remaining for brushing) and remaining ingredients — rice through egg white. Form into four 6 oz patties.

3. Heat olive oil in a cast iron or non-stick skillet over medium. Grill burgers for 2 minutes on one side. Turn and brush with remaining barbecue/molasses mixture.

These are by far the best Veggie Burgers I’ve ever tried and even though it calls for a few ingredients you may not have on hand – they’re easy to make once you find everything you’ll need.

Enjoy!

  3. That sounds very tasty! I shall definitely be trying that out. Not sure how easy it is to source tinned beets in the UK, although luckily I do have some in my garden right now.

  4. I will definitely try this one. Veggie burgers are so wonderful. They don’t make me feel guilty or ill after eating them like a regular burger does. We have a restaurant in Sacramento that also makes their veggie burgers from scratch…Tower Cafe, although I’m not sure I could convince them to share the recipe. Thanks for sharing this one!

  5. Not a big veggie burger fan normally, but I love veggie pizzas. Strange `cos I really like meat.

  6. I’ve never had a veggie burger, although I’m tempted to try. What’s the texture like? I’ve always been concerned they’d be really light and not filling.

  7. I’m a huge fan of Houston’s. Great food, great atmosphere and certainly awesome veggie burgers. This on will be bookmarked.

    Score!

  8. This recipe looks great! I’m always on the look out for good veggie burger recipes as a lot of store bought ones don’t taste that great although the Realeat ones are pretty tasty and are suitable for vegans too.

  9. That looks really good. Another good way of doing a veggie burger is to just find a big portabello mushroom and substitute that in for the patty.

  10. Thank you , I love to read about other vegetarians and vegans as it gives me the strength to continue. I have about a thousand vegetarian feeds in my google reader, but another can’t hurt!! I did manage to find a good lentil recipes here, but I’ll be sure to try yours too. Thanks!

  11. I may not be a vegan but it seems like a delicious dish. What caught my attention was the word burger. I’m a burger fan.
