I searched the Internet for a recipe for my all-time favorite Veggie Burger. It’s from the restaurant that I’ve only seen in the South - Houston’s.
I found the recipe at the RecipeZaar but I’ve also found it a few other places and I have no idea which is the original, but… - Here is my version of the recipe:
4 tablespoons hickory barbecue sauce
1 tablespoon molasses
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained
2 cups cooked brown rice
1 tablespoon oat bran
2 tablespoons onions, finely chopped
2 tablespoons finely chopped canned beets
2 teaspoons beet juice
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon pickled jalapeno peppers, chopped
1 egg white
I only increased the amount of beets, beet juice and chili powder.
1. Stir together barbecue sauce and molasses. Set aside.
2. In a large bowl, mash beans. Stir in 3 tablespoons of the barbecue mixture (reserving remaining for brushing) and remaining ingredients — rice through egg white. Form into four 6 oz patties.
3. Heat olive oil in a cast iron or non-stick skillet over medium. Grill burgers for 2 minutes on one side. Turn and brush with remaining barbecue/molasses mixture.
These are by far the best Veggie Burgers I’ve ever tried and even though it calls for a few ingredients you may not have on hand - they’re easy to make once you find everything you’ll need.
Enjoy!

Wow! Looks like a yummy recipe! And perfect for someone who’s calorie-conscious too! Thanks for this nice post. can’t wait to try this recipe.
looks tasty will have to give this a go
That sounds very tasty! I shall definitely be trying that out. Not sure how easy it is to source tinned beets in the UK, although luckily I do have some in my garden right now.
I will definitely try this one. Veggie burgers are so wonderful. They don’t make me feel guilty or ill after eating them like a regular burger does. We have a restaurant in Sacramento that also makes their veggie burgers from scratch…Tower Cafe, although I’m not sure I could convince them to share the recipe. Thanks for sharing this one!
Not a big veggie burger fan normally, but I love veggie pizzas. Strange `cos I really like meat.
