Weight Loss Ramblings

Weight Watchers – Down 16 Lbs

I’ve lost 16 lbs since last year at this time.

For me, Weight Watchers is the way to go. It’s not so restrictive that I feel trapped. It’s flexible enough for my lifestyle and allows me to eat the foods that I love and still lose weight. It’s all about portion control.

I have to give Weight Watchers a big thumbs up!

Adopting a Healthy Lifestyle or Dieting – Which are You Doing?

As I was replying to a recent comment on my “down 4 lbs” post, I realized that I am always “dieting”. I have not embraced a healthy lifestyle and this became crystal clear when I realized that I’m either eating “right” or not. This is definitely a dieting mentality. And I wonder why I can’t seem to lose weight!

If I were focused on living and eating a healthful diet, an occassional treat or indulgence would be ok. I would still be eating healthy and NOT dieting.

What do you think? Are you eating healthy or dieting?

Down 4 Pounds

After two weeks of Weight Watchers, I’m down 4.2 lbs!

Next week I should receive accolades for having lost 5 lbs – if I do lose at least .8 lbs. I believe that is doable, but I am going out to dinner tonight and I may be going to a birthday party on Sunday, so we’ll see how much I lose.

I stayed for the meeting again, last night. I sat alone, but that gave me the opportunity to play Spider Solitaire on my Blackberry. My addiction has now spread to my cell phone. Technology is great!

I was still able to listen to the speaker – which was the point for me joining. The topic last night was how to survive going out to eat. This includes estimating portion size, asking the waiter/waitress to have the food prepared for a special diet, and knowing which foods are under the “SetPoints” – meaning you don’t have to worry about portion control.

It was all good, but I didn’t win any games!

Tide Laundry Detergent – Deception in the Cap

TideThis is a bit off-topic for me, but this is something that REALLY bothers me about big companies trying to deceive the consumers. For many years now, we’ve ONLY used Tide Laundry Detergent because after trying many other brands – name brands and off-brands, we found that Tide did the best job. We buy it on sale, try and use coupons, etc. because the stuff isn’t cheap.

My mother, who lives with us, generally does our laundry (I know – how great is that!) brought the changes in the Tide measuring cap to my attention. She was very upset and felt like she was being taken advantage of by a corporate giant – Procter & Gamble. She’s been using the liquid detergent for years and became very accoustomed to the measuring cap on the top of every bottle. She doesn’t know when the change occurred, but she realized that the bottle had a new cap. The new cap was actually a different size than the old cap. Apparently the new cap is larger and the measuring lines are far below where they were in the old cap. Now, I don’t believe this is an accident at all, but a way to get the loyal consumers to unknowingly use more of the product.

My mother was furious when she figured this out! She also said the the measuring lines are so small and difficult to read. But she had been filling the cap up to the spot that she had done for years, not realizing that the size had changed and she was using more detergent with each load since the cap change.

I found another interesting post on Tide and their deceptive practices here – http://www.mouseprint.org/2010/02/01/tide-why-you-get-fewer-loads-than-promised/.

That’s my rant for the day!

Weight Watchers Meeting Update

I went to the meeting on Thursday evening. There were more people there than I expected, but it is still the beginning of the year. It wasn’t a very “warm” crowd, but I was probably the only person there without at least one friend.

The woman that lead the meeting was a little long-winded, but she was ok because she was funny – funny goes a long way with me. I stayed after the meeting, as instructed, because I was “new”. After sitting in the after meeting, I realized that I really wasn’t “new”. I’ve been doing the program online for at least a year and I’ve done weight watchers in the past many times. So, I politely excused myself and went home.

I’m not concerned about the meeting so much, it’s the accountablity that I’m looking for.

My First Weight Watchers Meeting – Tonight!

I’ve been doing the online version of weight watchers for over a year now and I really like it, but…. my friend keeps telling me, as I continue to lose the same 6 lbs over and over again, that perhaps I need to go to a “real” meeting. I think there might be something to that advice. A sense of accountability – is what I need (in addition to a little more exercise).

The meeting is in two hours. I’m also told that Thursday is the perfect day to attend weight watchers – far enough from the previous weekend to have the time to lose any weight that might have been gained over the weekend. We’ll see.

Thin Doesn’t Equal Healthy

I was talking to my husband, Adam this morning about what to write a post about today (not even through January and I’m already out of ideas! UGH). He rattled off a few ideas and then he started complaining about his weight. Now Adam is 6ft tall and maybe 170 lbs – not exactly obese or even overweight. So, I roll my eyes at him – because I have the perpetual 20-30 lbs that I need to lose – really! And he comes back at me and exclaims “just because a person is skinny, doesn’t mean that they’re healthy”. And, he’s right.

He has a naturally high metabolism and he’s definitely active – yard work, shoveling massive amounts of snow, bike riding, etc. His diet is about the same as mine – not necessarily watching what we’re eating like we should be, but he doesn’t gain weight. But, he has high cholesterol and this can be a serious health issue. In fact, I’m 20lbs overweight according to the charts for my age and height, but my cholesterol is fine.

We always seem to assume that heavy = unhealthy and I suppose, in general that can be true as we hear all the time the diseases and conditions that obesity play a huge roll in. But, we rarely think about those who appear to be “healthy” may actualy have as many health issues as those of us with weight to lose.

Thanks for listening.
