Losing weight, one diet at a time; one month at a time…
Adopting a Healthy Lifestyle or Dieting – Which are You Doing?
As I was replying to a recent comment on my “down 4 lbs” post, I realized that I am always “dieting”. I have not embraced a healthy lifestyle and this became crystal clear when I realized that I’m either eating “right” or not. This is definitely a dieting mentality. And I wonder why I can’t seem to lose weight!
If I were focused on living and eating a healthful diet, an occassional treat or indulgence would be ok. I would still be eating healthy and NOT dieting.
What do you think? Are you eating healthy or dieting?

Nutrition for a healthy life since I am healthy. 6 meals a day like. As not to start your day without breakfast. As not to eat after the evening from 6.

I am trying to learn how to eat healthy. I have 43 years worth of poor nutrition to undo, and in order to do that I need to restrict what I eat for a while. Eventually I’ll start adding stuff in – I do miss chocolate! – but for right now I have to do without. So, no, I’m not “on a diet” but I’m not eating even occasional treats, either. Yet.

Weight can be summed up
diet
exercises
changing style
thats it

I choose healthy foods. Stick to water, milk and 100% fruit and vegetable juices as your main beverages and limit sugary soft drinks. If you get tired of plain water, add a slice of lemon or lime to add a touch of flavor.

It is really a big issue, now a days, especially for ladies, as discussed about weight loss. As there are many complexions for genetics, wherein you may see in many people, for even when they are into scarcity of foods (low-fat), then also the increment of fatness goes on…
Still I would like to suggest, that natural exercises, like jogging, running if possible, sit-ups, etc., are very important then taking low-fat food stuffs….
Thanks.

Hey, I think the border between the two is skewed, changing your lifestyle involves dieting, and vice-versa.

It is better to adopting a healthy life so you would able to lose weight and maintaina stable weight.
But it is difficult to resist to our temptation for chocolate and candys.

I find that the healthier I eat, then the more I can eat, and it is as far from the idea of dieting as in “starving to death” than it can be. The better my food choices are more I can eat. I have been steadily losing a pound a week since focusing on losing my extra weight since January. So far, so good and no starving here!

Eat right and stay healthy. Exercise is also very important and always keep your head up. Don’t try to look around for the new fad diets, the food has always been on the table, it’s just about the amount you eat and the way its portioned.

I think …
lifestyle change (lots fruit, saccharin and not sugar, …)
sports, 1 or 2 times per week
diet is really difficult to do, always 3 month after you leave the diet because you are very hungry lol

I exercise but still tend to eat all the wrongs stuff. I’m working hard on it though and hope to improve my eating habits soon.

I am affraid that I am one of those people who approaches diet in fits and starts. I go through phases when I go mad about eating health food, not oicking between meals etc. Unfortunately I never seem to be able to keep it up for long before the allure of quick and easy solutions start to win again. That said i have managed to give up sugar in coffee, and on everything else for that matter. I no longer by sugar and have got to the point now tat I don’t miss it, so I geuss I can look on that as a small victory in the ongoing war that is my daily diet.

I eat sensibly around 4-5 medium sized meals a day. It is always better to eat healthily then to diet. I have some bad experiences with diets.

Thank you for you most helpful comments on losing weight, I have tryed many diffrent weight loss programes in the past, and your comment where very helpful.I have had a little success with keeping my weight to what I enjoy it to be. I was three stone more then what I should be, and got down to two stone less then my ideal weight. I am now back up to a stone higher then I should be. But I anm now working on getting back to my I deal weight.
Thank you once again.

I consider what I am doing as living a healthy lifestyle. I try to do really well through the week but will splurge on at least one meal on the weekend. I look forward to this and therefore it helps me keep on track throughout the week.

In my opinion it is not good to go on a diet. It is better to make a lifestyle change that always consists of a healthy diet and exercise regime. The occasional snack is OK, as long as it is not the type of snack that you can lose your self control on.

I tend to eat small and often I find it a lot better for the digestive system. Eating to much late at night as well can sometimes cause bloatedness!!

I guess yo-yo dieting isn’t a healthy lifestyle, there are plenty of diets and i think its better to choose an old fashioned nutrious diet where maybe it takes a little longer to lose weight but where you aren’t propelled into binge eating afterwards than to undertake a more rapid and fashionable diet.

I am personally trying to create a more healthy lifestyle, as bikini season is fast approaching. The current diet I am working is a cheaters diet. I eat healthy during the week (i.e. low calorie diet) and then on the weekends I allow myself to eat whatever I want. I am essentially constantly changing it up so my body can’t get into a routine of only burning the number of calories that I am eating. It is really an ingenious concept and has worked pretty well for me so far and I still get to eat the things I like! I love it!
I eat healthy. I try to keep my meals low in carbs and slightly higher in proteins. I eat a lot of veggies and one orange a day. I exercise a lot (4-5 times a week) on top of walking home every day from work (45 min fast pace walk).
I agree with Summer, it is better to eat more healthy and more often then to stop eating, which is the worst way to try to lose weight, as you are only fooling your body that you are starving and that it should save the calories…

Healthy lifestyle only! No freaken diets! You should struggle with the reasons of extra weight not with the extra weight itself.

Dieting can reduce the nutrients you need for your body. Many people do not know the right diet they need to do with their bodies. For me, choosing a healthy living can produce a good outcome for you than dieting.

we all should eat healthy. I work too late and get up too late, so I don’t eat breakfast generally. I also like to eat healthy and do some exercises, making my body good, but I cann’t adjust the time still.

The best is to eat more times a day, but small meals. Of course, only healthy food comes in option + exercise frequently and for sure everybody can look good.

I diet. I usually eat 2 soft meals a day. Although I pig out on these two meals, not sure if I am getting ahead or falling behind on healthy goals.
I feel very full after the big meal so I don’t have to eat as much.
Any thoughts on this as a diet solution?

Which would make more effective healthy living lose weight. Put simply be calculated as follows. Diet can be interpreted to limit the body’s need for substance needed by the body. Of course it would be wrong, if we limit the actual substance is needed by our bodies. However, with a healthy lifestyle, that means, we manage well what substances into our bodies. We can sort out what is good and what is not good. So I think, try to live a healthy life is better than a diet.

Yep, a balanced diet and exercising 2-3 times a week is the way to manage your weight on a long term basis.

Honestly, I’ve found myself in the same boat as you numerous times. Always dieting after gaining weight during a 3-week busy spell or a long vacation in which calories consumed were way over the norm. But I’m a big believer in the “adopting a healthy lifestyle” option instead. Case and point: last year I entered a biggest loser competition at work. For 8 weeks I made a conscious effort to exercise moderately while eating small fairly healthy meals 5 times per day and minimizing consumption of alcohol and sweets. I felt great, got my weight down 13 pounds within 3 weeks and was able to keep the weight off the entire 8 weeks and beyond. I finally began gaining the weight back when I started eating carelessly and neglected exercise. During the entire 8 weeks I did nothing drastic, just played it smart.

Its hard for alot of people to grasp the difference between the two. They think you have to diet hard to be healthy.
We all know exercise and diet compliment eachother. However I’ve found that losing weight and maintaining my weight has been mostly influenced (up to 80% I estimate) by eating healthy. When I eat healthy, the type of exercise I do seems less important although it certainly helps with my overall well being.

Healthy living style is very effective than diet. I think diet is not effective like healthy life style. It will be good to take some herbal treatments and practice yoga for healthy living life.

You should always aim to just eat healthy. It does suck for the first couple months but people need to move past the old cravings.
The best way to eat healthy at home is to not have any temptation. I know, if I have junk food at home then I’m going to eat it. So it’s best just not to have the temptation at home.
Dieting too much I think could be bad habbit. Because something bad will occured if you always doing that. In my opinion, we should doing healthy lifestyle in almost everyday. Do it like take some walk near on your home at morning, jogging every week, and fitness every 2 weeks.
For me, It depends on what you mean by “eating healthy”. On several occasions, i found that eating only protein and vegetables and going low on carbs, have risen my weight. It didn’t really matter whether I ate healthy or not my weight seems to rise most of the time. The only way i can maintain my weight on normal terms is by eating only twice a day, which isn’t a very healthy habit at all.

According to me healthy lifestyle is always better for living a good healthy life.In this ways there is no need to any dieting. For healthy lifestyle sometimes you have to avoid junk food as they can make you more fat.Soups, salad and fruits are just good for healthy life.

Boosting your metabolism is very important. This is easily done by eating a healthy snack between meals. Starving yourself will lower you metabolic rate. Also, drinking at least 2 quarts of water a day will give it a boost.

We all know that “HEALTH IS WEALTH”. Too much of dieting is not the healthy option. It sometimes leads to weakness in body. You must have a balanced diet with low calorie foods. Calorie matters the most. High calorie diet is what you should avoid and have a daily physical exercise which will keep you healthy.
Hi, I couldn’t agree with you more. It is all about health. If you don’t have your health, really nothing else matters. It’s really true, because if you think about it for a minute, everything else comes to a halt if you are sick. And unfortunately so many people are getting sicker and sicker with the food that is being consumed in this country.
I have to say I loved your video about the crab cakes, but you don’t need to diet at all, in my opinion. You look like you are at your perfect weight from what I could see in that video. All you need to do is eat healthy like you said.
I used to have a weight problem, and about 8 1/2 years ago I took off over 100 lbs. It took me 1 1/2 years, but I’ve kept it off ever since, and I do eat a very clean healthy diet, and I’ve never loved food as much as I do now. Now all I have to put up with is people telling me I’m too thin. Honestly, you can’t please everyone, so only please yourself, lol.
I have a blog, and I would love for you to check it out. I don’t know if I’m allow to post it here, so please delete it, if I’m not. It is coffeysplace.blogspot.com. I would recommend my post entitled Emotional Freedom From Food, and Emotions Are Gluttonous. If you don’t come to read it, I wanted to mention EFT. I don’t know if you’ve heard about it, (if you google it you’ll get lots of info) but it is extremely helpful with food issues, actually it’s helpful with everything.
Anyway, you really have a cute website here, and I enjoyed it, and will be back. I wanted to put up a website, but I’m not very computer savvy, so I settled for a blog.
Take care,
Jeanne

For me: Diets just dont work. What has worked for me is just healthy lifestyle and radical changes to eating patterns. I’ve become a vegetarian and I stopped drinking and started exercising, Then I lost loads of weight. Trying to go “on a diet” before that just didn’t work. So whatever you find that works for you – keep doing!

I lost about 10 pounds by just changing a few things in my diet.
I stopped eating after 7 pm
I added a protein shake in the morning
I started walking 10 minutes a day
I switched from drinking pop to drinking lemon water
I bought light beer (low cal)
Just by switching a few things and incorporating new things I was able to easily shed a few pounds. Hope that helps!

By nature, each of us has a unique body composition, thus, the foods we eat and the medicines we take may have varied effects. For instance, a particular weight loss diet may give negative side effects for one person but may also bring good effects to others…
Overall, IMHO, no matter how minimal the side effects would be, losing weight solely by taking some magic pill isn’t worth the risk. It’s always best to go natural!

Most heart and blood vessel disease is caused by a buildup of cholesterol, plaque and other fatty deposits on artery walls. I would like to suggest that doing a physical activity instead of eating together. I have to agree that adopting a healthy lifestyle goes beyond a single generation. Somehow my kids are not exactly emulating my eating habits yet. They find it hard to give up their fast food preferences.

Hi Nice post , nice questions asked… what i thinking is having a proper diet will neither increase the weight nor it will decrease. and once if you have started working on diet them you have to maintain the things going.
your body should look healthy so dont over diet .just follow the regular routine with less calaries intake and you will definetly be slim and healthy….

Your idea about switching a few things and moving in that direction is realistic, effective strategy. Not sure if you are in Canada, but here, one of the newest health care organizations is the nurse practitioner led clinic initiative, and the first clinic is in my city . One of the first programs implemented is a weight loss/ healthy eating program with like minded strategies. It’s nurse week here
, and kudos to nurses everywhere!

Many people only “diet”. Adopting a “diet” is a sure fire way to fail. To truly lose weight and maintain a healthy, permanent weight, you have to adopt a healthy lifestyle. You can’t view foods as simply “fitting in” to a diet. The very notion of a diet is temporary.
Once healthy eating and exercise becomes a habit, it becomes natural! That is the key to long term success.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to calories in vs calories out and it will be this way until the end of time. :>)

I hate to use the term diet, I like to call it “my eating plan”. I didn’t actually start loosing weight until a changed my lifestyle. It was something that I just had to do for myself, everyone always would tell me that I needed to loose weight but I had to realize it first then act on it.
It all starts with you!

Hi Very nice post on Dieting. Actually frankly speaking there is no need of dietng unless and until you have grown tooo fat and can stand with people and feeling ashamed off. So you need to start deitng. This is only for overweight. But the one who are just few pounds over weight . workout will do for them.. dont do deiting eat whatever you want and work out. Burn as much calories your consuming and you will be healthy trust me.

my biggest problem is snacking… to help me cut out snacking i use Burner Balm. burner balm carries me between each meal keeping the urge to snack at bay. it has made all of my dieting more successful and i am thankful. i found even when i eat healthy meals the snacks i eat in between are packed with sugar and carbs.
now that i have cut out the snacking all the healthy meals i eat are doing their job

Say NO to ‘diets’…. they tend to be short term, you may get results but what happens after that? typically people will put the weight (and more) back on.

It is amazing that one of the most common strategies people employ when they want to lose weight is to skip meals or try and starve themselves!
Whatsmore, people who stay lean with ease often eat 5 or 6 small meals a day!
By doing so they keep their metabolism elevated, never feel hungry and best of all, keep insulin levels low, which is so important when you want to burn fat and therefore lose weight.

Diet can be a strange word and most people associate it with eating less but to touch on an earlier comment, it’s not necessarily the case and eating the right food in accordance with good exercise is (in my opinion) the best way.
Having said that, if you burn more calories than you eat, you will lose weight. FACT. Leaning to measure how many calories you consume during a typical day is important and something worth doing.
Geoff, I have been waiting for that magic moment also. All my life I have heard that the older you get the less your appetite. Well I haven’t seen that.
Adopting a healthy lifestyle is really the only way to achieving long term weight loss success and should be the goal of everyone looking to lose the weight once and for all. It is not easy, but think of all the health problems you can develop from being overweight.

I have quite a physical job and never had a weight problem until about 5 years ago. the pounds were piling on, i could’nt understand why. Then it suddenly hit me. My wife is a diabetic and does’nt seem to have put an ounce on over the years, so it must be her diet. No chocolate or candy, in fact very little sweet stuff at all. I cut out all sugar, and the weight dropped off me. I’m not saying it will work for everyone, but i was pleasantly shocked with the results.

In my experience diets never work! It’s all about doing a little bit of exercise each day e.g. getting off the bus one stop earlier, taking a walk in the evening, etc. and then getting used to the idea that food is to give us energy during the day and keep us going so we can get on with our lives. It does not rule us and we should not be eating all day long. Once the mind is sorted, the weight will drop off!

Let’s face it, there is so much mis-information out there when it comes to nutrition and I think virtually everyone has made some major mistakes along their journey. I know I did, especially when it came to following the food pyramid!
Now, after learning more about nutrition I try to limit most of the foods on the base of the food pyramid without cutting them out altogether of course. I have got great results by using this simple approach!

Ok it depends of how much faster do you want to lower your weight. Personally I thing its better to have healthy lifestyle cuz it has long time results.. but if you combine both together you may have the ultimate result

Weight can easily be lost by taking only TWO steps in life. First is, controlling diet, especially avoiding fatty foods. And Secondly, doing regular breathing exercises like Kapalbhati Pranayama and yoga. This is wonderful and proven formula adopted by thousands of people all over the world.
Diets DO work. People lose weight, often very fast, through the hundreds of diets out there. However, you often hear stories about how immediately after losing weight, they gain it all back, and more. This is often referred as YO YO dieting.
The problem lies within people reverting back to their old habits after finishing their diet…the very habits which led them to their current weight problems.
The only way to sustainable weight loss (and good health), is to make lifestyle changes that support a healthy lifestyle. Good dieting, exercise, and creating an environment which supports you in making the best decisions.

I am adopting healthy life style!!!
I am still sure that there are many people who are still following that diet chart and even have stopped eating for one time in a day! They still don’t know what bad effect can strict dieting can have on them.
Starting with healthy breakfast and eating low carb diet in fractions in a day is best way to remain healthy and loose weight! Avoid eating until your plate is finished and drink lot of water to increase digestion. Also kick away parties and junk food and start increasing your metabolism activities..
What can be more simpler that that?

One of the biggest problems of today is lack of activity. There are many different kinds of benefits associated with adopting a healthy diet. Stress can be quite harmful to your heart’s health. It can be caused by personal as well as professional reasons. Professionally, long hours of work. Anyway, Thanks for sharing this article.

I completely agree that short term dieting simply doesn’t work. You need to come up with an eating plan that you can stick with over the long haul. Add in a regular exercise and you will achieve your goals….not overnight, and maybe not as quickly as you would if you did a crash diet, but far more sustainably.
A diet is something for a short time. To lose weight and not come back to our old weight we need to change our lifestyle by for example reducing fatty food. In this way we can eat whenever we want, of course reasonable amounts and do not put on weight. Vegetables like carrot, lettuce or cucumber we can eat as much as we want.
I try to keep an eye on what my calorie intake is each day and make sure to do enough exercise to burn those calories off. It all goes back to what I was taught in health class in high school. If you burn off the same amount of calories you take in, you can stay around the same weight. If you want to lose weight, you have to burn more than you take in. It’s that simple.

For me healthy lifestyle means getting a lot of exercises, eating healthy foods, no smoking and is at a healthy weight. Simple, but we can’t deny the fact that most of us are experiencing hard knocks in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Smoking is a very risky, yet 75% of of mankind are addicted with cigarettes.

I like eating healthy. Eating correctly is the key for either weight gain or weight loss. Getting the correct can be cheaper then people realize. Buying raw ingredients, preparing the food yourself, and buying good fresh vegetables can save allot of money.

I eat less carbs for every meal, drink lots of water, including a glass of warm lemon water in the morning, never skip breakfast, and eat mostly fish and beans for protein. I add ground flaxseed to my cereals or porridge, and make sure there is a nice balance of veg and fruits. So far, I have no major weight issues! :O)

I would definitely say I’m a dieter. My lifestyle is far from healthy, and that seems to be the downfall. Your question really put that all into perspective.
