Follow up to NOFollow

Every time this blog is added to a list of blogs that do not use the “nofollow” attribute on comments I tend to get even MORE spam than I already receive. Obviously, I try and approve all comments that are of value and appear to have a bit of sincerity and I delete all of the spam. And sometimes if the comment is good, but so transparent that it’s only about the link - I will still approve the comment.

I am making one stipulation to the comments - the link must go to a blog. I will not approve comments any longer that go to “regular” sites.

  1. This is good to know, I was just thinking about changing all of my comments to “dofollow” but I already get a truckload of spam every day. In one way I thought it would lead to people at least pretending they were interested in my site and making nice comments, to at least keep the page refreshing, but I don’t want to have to approve 100’s of spam emails every day either… ahh decisions, decisions..

  2. There is a wordpress plugin that will allow you to control which users get the no follow removed from the their comments. I found this page looking for it.

  3. I support your decision both your dofollow decision and your rules. If someone puts a good comment, it means that they read your post at least and came up with an answer. For me, it is worth to approve also. But spams do always come, no escape; a reality of blogosphere.

  4. I understand your decision..I also hate spam.^_^

  5. I agree to you! As long as they leave worth comments I think the comment should be approve. For me, that’s the best way to show to your readers that you appreciate their time reading your blog.

  6. That is really not a good idea, but it was the truth behind it making a comment for a back link. But I think if the comment is acceptable and helpful to other readers I guess that is not bad at all. ^_^

  7. Yeah, spammers are always there! As long as the comment makes sense and and not off the topic I guess there’s nothing wrong with that! I think that’s a good decision for you. ;)

  8. Great, i’ve never thought about that. How con you remove nofollow from comment links?

  9. As long that the comment adds to the conversation is fine. I only disapprove generic comments like: “Nice Post!”

  10. Recently saw another dofollow blogger complaining about increased spam. I don’t really think that dofollow increases volume of spam received that much… spam is reality of internet no escape from it really, but that’s just my opinion. About no approving links to regular sites, more and more bloggers seem to to that but, in my opinion, it’s not really black and white situation. I mean if comment is genuine (and not linking to any dubious website) why not approve it? Not all people have blogs to link to and they still read blogs and might want to make their comments.

  11. According to me these kinds of blogs are really very motivating ones. By hearing about examples of persons loosing weight it gives inspiration to the fat person to himself become an example.

  12. sad huh.

my inbox and blog is filled with spam too.

  13. I think all worthy comments should be approved.

  14. Understand how you feel. I did the same thing, and I’ve been pining to get some ‘real’ comments. The only commenters I seem to attract on my blogs are those who have absolutely no interest in the content of the post, and don’t even bother to read it.

  15. ok here’s the deal….those dofollow list blogs do generate traffic, and traffic generates ad revenue *as I click around your site*…

  16. hi, i know spam can be a real pain in the @$$!. I’ve got like 5 different plug ins to prevent it on my blog, and i still have to delete spam…

i dont’ mind people leaving comments and dropping a link … what i don’t like are the spam comments for viagra, drugs, extenders, and other crap.

i have to say that i don’t think that dofollow increases spam…after all, EVERY BLOG is attacked by spammers…but there are tools to help combat it.

I think that Do Follow is a great thing for fellow bloggers to connect….the Blogosphere shouldn’t be made to suffer cuz of the scum, right?

    Nice Blog BTW!

  17. I support your decision both your dofollow decision and your rules.

  18. Yah same here. I receive tons of spam but since i use Wordpress the Aksimet plugin help a bit with the spam problem atleast.

  19. Yes, spams can be irritating. But it seems they cannot be avoided totally. We can only what is best possible and not allow it to ruin our ‘happiness” and joy in blogging. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
BTW, i like the dancing ladies displayed at your top page.

    cheers,

  20. Are you using Akismet? My blog is fairly new, but in my experience with my other blog, I only get a handful of spam comments. Anyway, I respect a blogger’s rule to either accept or delete comments that are irrelevant to an article/entry.

  21. I do use Akismet. I probably get about 100 spam comments a day. Maybe that’s low compared to others - I am a wuss after all.

  22. Your right, people just comment to get links, i also have 30-40 spam messages on my blog daily, sometimes it gets to 140 spam messages but the Akismet plugin puts them in another folder and it helps me to see the good messages first, and when i have time i look at the spam messages because you never know if a normal comment goes there.

  23. Hi Brad,
I’m a owner of my blog.I want to striped out the spam post.
You mentioned that you found the wordpress plugin which allow you to control which users get the no follow removed from the their comments. Can you tell me where to get that plugin?

  24. found it from googling.

    hope it help.

  25. I think if the comment applies to what you are talking about then it shouldn’t matter what the anchor text is. :)

  26. I thnk if someone makes a nice, polite, worthy comment, then it should be approved.
